Aesthetic rhinoplasty, in the broad term, is reshaping
of the nose generally by reducing its size and lifting
and narrowing of its tip. The goal of the procedure
may change in accordance with the shape of each nose
and the desired result. Reconstructive rhinoplasty,
on the other hand, is correction
of the deformities or defects of the nose which resulted
from prior injury such as trauma, skin cancer and surgery.
Technically, rhinoplasty may be performed with close
and open methods depending on the needs and wishes of
each patient. During the same procedure, breathing problems
such as deviated nasal septum (septoplasty) and enlarged
inferior turbinates may also be treated.
Duration of the procedure is about 1-2 hours and can
be applied under general anesthesia or intravascular
sedation. Hospital stay is usually not required. Return
to work is in about 7-10 days. Sports and heavy exercises
may be started in about 2-3 weeks. The nose has to be
protected from trauma and sun burns for about 8 weeks.
It may take up to
6-12 months for the nose to acquire its final form.
Main risks of the procedure are temporary swelling and
bruising, bleeding, infection, headache, breathing problems,
personal dissatisfaction, deformity and the need for
revisional surgery.
