The science and art of Plastic Surgery is composed
of two essential parts; aesthetic surgery and reconstructive
surgery.
In aesthetic surgical procedures, reshaping of the
normal parts and organs of the body is performed. Aesthetic
surgery aims to improve and maintain the self-esteem
of the people, while at the same time helping them to
maintain better relationships with themselves and their
environment.
In reconstructive surgical procedures, parts and organs
of the body which lost their normal structure and appearance
due to illness, surgical removal, radiation therapy,
cancer, trauma, and birth defects are either reshaped
or recreated using different surgical techniques.
Some procedures and operations, on the other hand,
may serve both reconstructive and the aesthetic purposes.
Typically, reshaping of a breast to match the reconstructed
other breast removed due to cancer is a very common
example of this situation. Here, not only the reconstructive
sequence is completed providing natural symmetry, but
the other deformed breast is reshaped as well.
In Plastic Surgery, in addition to the commonly performed
surgical procedures, many nonsurgical treatments are
also utilized. For example, endovasvular laser treatment
(EVLT) of varicose veins, as well as the other laser
treaments used for birth marks, spider veins, age spots,
rosacea, psoriasis and unwanted hair, and the treament
of wrinkles with laser, botox injections, fat grafts
and filler materials are very common examples of the
nonsurgical treatment methods used.
